FIBER LASER WELDED TUBE MILL DESTINED FOR NEW YORK

Yoder Manufacturing of Cleveland, Ohio, a member of the Formtek Group, has recently received an order for a Fiber Laser Welded Tube Mill for producing decorative stainless components.  This fusion-welded mill will utilize the latest advancements in laser welding – fiber lasers with twin-spot welding optics.  This welding method has been refined in recent years and with these advancements, laser welding is becoming more economical, more robust for the tube mill environment and less costly to operate when compared to their counterparts: CO2 laser and TIG/Plasma welding methods.  Integration into the mill systems has been improved and simplified.  The wall thickness boundaries are being further expanded with current capabilities for wall thicknesses up to 0.375” (9.5 mm).  There are no real limitations for the outer diameters to be processed, which will be dictated by surrounding equipment.  For more information, please contact sales@formtekgroup.com, or direct at +1(216) 292-6300.  Or visit us on the web at www.yodermfg.com.

Reshaping Stainless Steel Tubing for Fluid Applications

Many customers who produce round austenitic stainless steel tubing often wonder how much reshaping can be performed while not harming the material integrity due to cold working and how they orient that section for their mill system.

Taking round product and reshaping, or reforming, into complex shapes is common among carbon steel tube producers but not common to austenitic stainless steel producers.  The term complex shape does not necessarily require various sharp angles, which has no purpose in fluid or Heat Transfer applications.  Instead, it complexity can encompass very thin, tall elliptical shapes that are not easily produced on standard, reshaping capable, tube mills.

Depending on the application, five, six, seven or more stands are required to reshape the round product into elliptical shapes.  It essentially depends on how much material must be physically moved.  A well-engineered tooling arrangement will design around a specific amount of material movement that can be accomplished per pass, per horizontal center (center between driven stands), etc.  Unlike more common tubing applications, the manufacture of complex stainless steel tubing requires an integrated tooling and mill design to truly optimize the forming process.  Most tube mill system producers do not have this expertise in house and must work with their tooling suppliers externally to determine the correct material flow patterns that yield satisfactory results.


Yoder Manufacturing, a long time supplier of tube & pipe mill systems, is unique in the industry.  As part of the Formtek Group, Yoder is able to supply tube mills, roll tooling and cutoff equipment, in conjunction with Hill Engineering, another Formtek company.  As a whole, they are able to look at the complete manufacturing system and apply appropriate disciplines to yield a system that reshapes round, fusion welded tubing into an ellipse.  Based on recent installations, Yoder installed an elliptical tube system that produces a finished product that is 73% thinner than the incoming round tube diameter (as shown below).

Due to the reshaping tooling designs, the final product had minimal surface marking, typically caused by speed mismatch, which was accomplished by considering the profile orientation through the mill:  the tall axis of the ellipse is horizontal, taking advantage of the natural forming state of the driven stands, while reducing the effects of rotational speed differences, due to changes in tool-to-section radii.

Orienting a section like this would normally cause headaches for cutoff manufacturers because the system requires a horizontal flow to shear the ellipse to length.  Again, Yoder and the intercompany expertise of Hill Engineering were able to look at the big picture and determine that designing a cutoff with a complete horizontal cutting motion yielded far more advantage to the reshaping process.

In summary, reshaping of austenitic tubing is possible but you must consider the overall manufacturing solution with the forming, tooling and cutoff as an integrated system.  Allowing ample amount of stands to perform the reshaping, and orienting the product so that it is aligned to the strengths of your mill system is crucial in producing a complex shape successfully.

Yoder Flux Cored Wire Machine

Flux cored wire is produced with either a lap or butt seam, to retain the flux material within the tube.  Powdered flux is metered into the roll forming process, after which the tube is drawn down to the final wire diameter and recoiled, typically at speeds ranging from 200 to 500 FPM.  Yoder provides roll forming machinery and tooling that is integrated to the FCW production system.  Recently, Yoder has partnered with Lamnea Bruk, Sweden, to supply the roll forming equipment and form tooling which is integrated to their FCW Production system.  Depending on the frequency of product changes, the FCW machinery can be setup cantilevered, for quick tooling changeover, or between housings, depending on the customer’s needs.

Yoder Delivers Flexible Fabrication System for Water Tanks

Yoder, a member of the Formtek Group, has recently supplied flexible fabrication system to manufacture the side walls of livestock water tanks. Included with this system is programmable coil processing line for producing the required blank, roll former to form the side wall features and a CNC-controlled 4-roll bender to form the side wall panels into various shapes; both round and oval tanks. API WELD SQUEEZE BOX DESTINED FOR SOUTH AMERICA

Yoder Manufacturing of Cleveland, Ohio, has recently been contracted to supply a heavy wall, high strength four (4) roll weld box.  Yoder has designed a new style weld squeeze box that consists of four (4) roll configuration.   A top head roll assembly consisting of two (2) top edge rolls will control the edge presentation prior to welding.  The head roll assembly has vertical adjust as a group and individual adjustments to compensate for improper strip edge alignment.  The main squeeze pressure is provided by the bottom squeeze unit which will utilize two (2) side rolls only for rounds that range from 2.375” to 3.500” (60.3 to 88.9 mm) OD up to 75,000 PSI (517 MPa).  This heavy wall weld box will be used primarily for producing the latest grades of premium API Pipe and Tubing products.  The bottom squeeze roll assemblies are unique in that there is fast side close adjustment, as well as a fine tuned, gear compensated, close adjustment, thus eliminating the need for operators to utilize power tools, which can cause injury if they slip, as well as undue wear and excessive adjustment of the unit.  All roll spindles are designed so the bearings are housed within the rolls.  The welding area is the worst case scenario for temperature and wear in the tube mill, so this shaft-bearing arrangement yields the best possible bearing life for the weld box.

The weld box assembly has the ability to move up and downstream with respect to the tube mill flow.  This allows the operator to fine tune the weld VEE angle with respect to the last fin-pass.  Therefore, depending on your particular tooling design, the weld VEE angle can be changed to gain the best operating parameters for your particular product.  The weld squeeze box assembly can handle up to wall thicknesses of 0.256” (6.5 mm).

Yoder Supplies 5” Mill for Mechanical & Structural Tubing

Yoder recently supplied a tube mill for mechanical and structural tubing.  The mill has a capacity of 5” OD, ¼” maximum wall thickness, and can re-shape up to 4” square or 2” x 6” rectangle.  The system includes Yoder’s latest design of weld box, which is a 5-roll arrangement for larger products and 4-rolls for smaller diameters.  Additionally, the system includes the WH-350-RS reshaping stands, which can reshape up to 4” (101.6 mm) square, rectangles up to 6” (152.4) wide and as small as 2” (50.8 mm) in the horizontal and vertical axes, for materials up to 0.250”  (6.35 mm) thickness.  The reshaping stand has been designed so it may be retrofitted on any mill that makes up to 5” (127 mm) round, and can directly replace existing Yoder W-35 and WH-350 Sizing Stands. 

In addition to the mill mechanicals, Yoder provided the general engineering for the project, providing foundations and arrangement for the coil handling, welding and cutoff equipment for planning of the customer’s Greenfield site.

Yoder suppliers roll former for Roll-up Doors

Yoder recently supplied a roll forming machine and tooling for production of roll up door slat.  The Yoder QVW-150 16 station roll former replaced an existing machine from a competitor.  The new rafted roll forming machine gives the customer the flexibility to run multiple tooling sets on the production line without extensive downtime when switching between profiles.  Yoder designed the new machine to match the height of the coil handling and cutoff equipment, which was reused, so the roll former could be set in the existing line.

WH-350 WELD SQUEEZE BOX DESTINED FOR OHIO

Yoder Manufacturing of Cleveland, Ohio, a member of the Formtek Group, has recently been contracted to refurbish and upgrade an existing WH-350 tube mill to produce structural shapes (HSS).  Formtek has designed a new style weld squeeze box that consists of a five (5) roll and four (4) roll configuration as deemed necessary by the particular product being produced.  Either configuration utilizes a top head roll assembly consisting of two (2) top edge rolls that control the edge presentation prior to welding.  The head roll assembly has vertical adjust as a group and individual adjustments to compensate for improper strip edge alignment.  The main squeeze pressure is provided by the bottom squeeze unit which will utilize two (2) side rolls only for rounds that range from 1.500” to 3.250” (38.1 to 82.6 mm) OD or two (2) side rolls and one (1) bottom roll for rounds that range from 3.250” to 5.000” (82.6 to 127.0 mm) OD.  With the ability to switch from 4-roll to 5-roll configuration allows the operator the utmost in flexibility to provide the proper material presentation for the welder.  The bottom squeeze roll assemblies are unique in that there is fast sides close adjustment as well as a fine tuned (and geared) close adjustment, thus eliminating the need for operators to utilize cheater bar tools, which can cause injury if they slip.  All roll spindles are “dead-shaft” design so the bearings are housed within the rolls to yield the best possible bearing life for the weld box, which is considered the worse case scenario for environment on the tube mill.


The weld box assembly has one last feature that is the ability to move up and downstream with respect to the tube mill flow.  This allows the operator to fine tune the weld VEE angle with respect to the last fin-pass.  Therefore, depending on your particular tooling design, the weld VEE angle can be changed to gain the best operating parameters for your particular product.  The weld squeeze box assembly can handle up to wall thicknesses of 0.250” (6.4 mm).

Yoder Introduces XW-Series Forming Machines

Yoder recently introduced its XW-series of driven forming stands for roll forming and tube mills. The three models of XW-Series driven stands incorporate a rigid, gusseted housing design, which has years of proven performance in the QVW-Series machines, with the additional feature of bottom shaft adjustment.  The design is reverse compatible with the QVW-Series roll stands, so they can be installed on existing installations with no modifications.  The bottom shaft adjustable design adds the ability to form deeper sections and performer greater amounts of reshaping on a roll former or tube mill, than was previously available in similar models.  The QVW-Series machine will continue to be the standard, universal driven design, with the option of the XW-Series available when the applications require.

Yoder Supplies Tier 1 Automotive Tooling

Yoder recently supplied tooling to a Tier 1 Automotive supplier for door trim.  The tooling is designed for forming a specialty polymer coated steel for use in roll forming door trim on the customer’s existing M-1 ½ machines.  Yoder’s experience with this material was especially important, as the thick coating is particularly sensitive to the forming pressures of steel.  This is the fourth such application Yoder has provided tooling for in recent years.

Yoder Upgrades M-2 Tube Mill

Yoder recently performed a major upgrade to a 75 year old M-2 tube mill, including roll stands, turkshead and drive system.   All the driven roll stands were replaced with new-style M-2 units.  The new style units will allow the customer to produce a larger diameter tube than they could previously. The tube mill stands include the gusseted outboard housing for improved rigidity, Additionally, the new double turkshead improves control of part straightness.  Finally, the drive system was upgraded from 2-motors to 3, effectively doubling the mill speed without any tooling modifications

Yoder Supplies M-1 ½ High Speed Mill Rebuild

Yoder recently supplied a manufacturer of ceiling grid the rebuild of M-1 ½ Roll forming stands for a high speed roll former .  The rebuilds include upgrading to latest, gusseted outboard housing, for increased rigidity, as well as the oil shielding and seals to insure proper lubrication at high production rates.  This is Yoder’s fourth facility providing rebuilds and capability upgrades for this customer.

Yoder Upgrades M-2 Tube Mill

Yoder Supplies QVW-150 Raft Retrofit for Flux Cored Weld Wire Mill

Yoder recently supplied a manufacturer of flux cored welding wire a QVW-150 raft set for retrofitting onto their existing, non-Yoder, roll forming machine.  Yoder’s experience with flux cored wire applications, as well as the user friendly design and flexibility of the QVW-style roll stands, made the retrofit easy, with the existing tooling able to be reused on the new raft set, without modification.  This is Yoder’s third customer recently, retrofitting of QVW-150 rafts to a non-Yoder mill, specifically for Flux Cored Weld Wire production
